The sector is highly responsible for propelling India’s overall development and enjoys intense focus from Government would ensure time-bound creation of world class infrastructure in the country. Infrastructure sector includes power, bridges, dams, roads, and urban infrastructure development. FDIs in the construction development sector (townships, housing, built up infrastructure and construction development projects) and construction (infrastructure) activities stood at US$ 25.78 billion and US$ 17.22 billion, respectively, between April 2000 and September 2020.The infrastructure sector has become the biggest focus area for the Government of India. India plans to spend US$ 1.4 trillion on infrastructure during 2019-23 to have a sustainable development of the country. India is expected to become the third largest construction market globally by 2022.

Civil Engineering along with other heavy engineering industry is the core growth engine for  infrastructural development. The government’s policy for creating world class infrastructure has led to the uptrend in investments in infrastructure and therefore the growth in civil engineering as was seen in the early 2000’s.  According to a report published in The Economic Times, 95 billion sq. ft. is the predicted demand in the real estate and construction industry by 2022. Despite such high demand, the sector lacks sufficient skilled workforce to meet this demand. Based on the report titled “Real Estate and Construction Professionals in India by 2022”  by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, there  will be a demand-supply gap ranging between 82% and 86% of skilled civil engineers, architects and others. This means our country needs 4 million skilled civil engineers in couple of years. These a few statistics that make it clear that there is a massive demand for civil engineering  professionals in the near future.
